The history of Mbeya Cement

Mbeya Cement Company Limited (MCCL) was established in 1973 by the Government of Tanzania and began production in 1983, quickly becoming a key cement supplier to the Southern Highlands and neighboring countries. Following privatization in 1999 Mbeya cement was bought by Commonwealth Development Corporation (CDC), it was acquired by Lafarge in 2001, and later became part of LafargeHolcim after the 2015 global merger. During this period, MCCL underwent major modernization through an investment of 104 billion TZS, which included a kiln upgrade, electrical system overhaul, and the installation of Tanzania’s first vertical cement mill. In November 2023, Holcim Ltd sold its 65% stake in MCCL to Amsons Group, a Tanzanian conglomerate, while the Government of Tanzania (25%) and NSSF (10%) retained their shares.

In October 2024, Amsons Group announced a $320 million investment to expand MCCL’s operations. This includes the construction of a second plant, “Mbeya Plant Two,” which will increase clinker production capacity from 1,000 to 5,000 tons per day. The expansion aims to meet growing domestic cement demand and support exports to regional markets such as Zambia, Malawi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The project is expected to create approximately 12,000 jobs, further strengthening MCCL’s contribution to Tanzania’s industrial growth and regional trade.(not to be included)
